Bulgaria looks to shake off 'cheap tourism' image

Bulgaria might already be a favourite with stag parties, but the country is looking to shake off its image as a cheap tourist destination as part of a major new development plan.

The eastern European nation has proved a hit with those planning a typical lads' weekend away in recent years, with budget airlines providing low-cost flights from across the UK.

Furthermore, the offer of cheap accommodation and even cheaper booze made Bulgaria the ideal location for a stag night.

However, in a bid to boost tourism revenues, the country's ministers are planning a number of improvements in service quality and infrastructure as they seek to develop a more up-market image.

And the changes are only likely to increase Bulgaria's appeal to stag parties, with plans to introduce sport, golf and hunting holidays, as well as a focus on spa tourism that could prove ideal for those looking to shake off the effects of a heavy night's drinking.
