Party Playlists: My Glastonbury 2014 Favourites

It’s quite a varied list but one that is ideal for some lazy, summer evening listening: James Blake – Retrograde – Seeing as Glasto is an English music festival it feels only right to start the playlist with an English musician. I’m a big fan of this guy and both of his albums are well worth a listen. This song is from his second album ‘Overgrown’. Interpol – The Heinrich Maneuver – I’ve been a fan of Interpol for years, and the news that they’ve got a new album coming out in September along with this festival appearance has made me revisit their old material. This track is one of their more ‘poppy’ singles, from their third album ‘Your Love to Admire’. Chvrches – Gun – This Glasgow-based electronic group released one of the best synthpop albums of recent years in 2013, reminding me of a slightly poppier version of The Knife’s ‘Deep Cuts’. I’ve not seen this band live but judging by the videos I’ve seen online and from friends they’d be worth seeing. Jungle – Drops – New guys on the scene Jungle have yet to release their debut album, however they’ve dropped a couple of decent two track EPs, and a couple of songs from their upcoming full length. The tune ‘Drops’ is my favourite from the EPs, and I’m really looking forward to hearing the album next month, which is released 14th July. Disclosure – Control – There were a number of UK-based electronic acts that broke through into the mainstream in 2013, and Disclosure were one of them thanks to the infectious ‘White Noise’. I’ve gone with one of their earlier tunes, the title track from the ‘Control’ EP. It’s a banger. Rudimental – Baby – Another UK act that blew up in 2013, Rudimental provided the soundtrack to the summer with their album ‘Home’ and a handful of well received singles. I’ve chosen ‘Baby’ for the playlist, which features on the album and was a B-side on the ‘Waiting All Night’ single. Great live performances are always guaranteed from this band. Jamie XX – Sleep Sound – Jamie Smith first made his name as part of The XX, before branching out on his own to begin remixing other people’s songs, as well as producing his own. Sleep Sound is one of Jamie’s newer productions, and if he can keep creating tunes like this I really hope there is an album forthcoming. Breach – Jack (Calibre Remix) – Everyone and their Nan knows this Deep House smash. You couldn’t avoid it last year, and Ben Westbeech was responsible for it. He’s been in the music scene since as far back as 2007, only producing and releasing music under the Breach banner in 2010. Since then he has gone from strength to strength. I’ve chosen the Calibre Remix of ‘Jack’ because I love a good remix, and I love a bit of Drum & Bass. Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed – Another Brit talent, Ellie Goulding has come into her own since the release of her first record, ‘Lights’. I think the single ‘Starry Eyed’ is still and absolute tune today, so it’s going on the list. Jurassic 5 – Jayou – Having been around the American alternative Hip-Hop scene for over 20 years, I’d say Jurassic 5 definitely deserve a spot on this playlist, and I’m only too happy to oblige. I could’ve picked almost any tune of theirs, but in the end I went with ‘Jayou’. It was a touch choice, believe me, and I’m sure there will be someone out there who disagrees with me. Stanton Warriors – Still Here – I bloody love Stanton Warriors, you can’t beat a bit o’ Breaks every now and then, so the boys make it in here towards the end of the playlist. Stanton tracks are a bit thin on the ground on Spotify, but I managed to find ‘Still Here’, which is one of my favourites! De La Soul – Me, Myself & I – Finally, a group that shouldn’t really need any introduction; De La Soul. Great band, great tune, and a great way to round off my ‘Favourites of Glastonbury’ playlist. I hope you’ve enjoyed it!
