Scotland island beaches 'are a perfect summer retreat'

People planning a stag weekend north of the border might be intent on locating Scotland's best pubs, but the country is also home to some of the UK's most impressive beaches.

That is the message from tourism officials at Visit Scotland, who are keen to promote the nation's coastline ahead of an expected sizzling summer.

While mainland life might be ideal for stag do revellers planning a big night on the town, those out to enjoy a more laid back weekend away could find Scotland's island beaches more appealing.

Top locations such as the North End in Iona and St Ninians in Shetland offer distinctive blue sea and soft white sand, making them perfect for lads looking to lark around for the day.

And seeing as most good stag weekends will not pass without a touch of booze, the miles of golden sands on Port Ellen, Islay are perfectly located near the island's eight whisky distilleries.

According to a recent Travelodge survey, many Brits are seeking to holiday north of the border this year, with the Scottish capital of Edinburgh emerging as the most popular destination of choice.
