Dublin stag do guide

Dublin is great if you are looking for

  • The chance to visit the home of the world famous Guinness

  • A lively city filled to the brim with great bars and friendly locals

  • Huge range of classic stag activities, and some unique experiences too

You’ll never be bored, and you’ll never go thirsty, on a Dublin stag weekend. This is a city that’s literally bursting with life. This Irish gem boasts thrilling day time activities and a pulsating nightlife scene with an impressive pub-to-person ratio!

The Irish capital is also home to the world famous Guinness Brewery tour, always one of our most popular Dublin stag activities. After all, it would be rude not to. Easy to get to,easy to get around, and with loads to do by day and by night, Dublin is the perfect destination for a last weekend of freedom all year round. You’ll be bubblin’ in Dublin in no time!

Getting around

It’s easy to get to Dublin for your stag do. Most groups get there by plane, with a wide range of budget flights available from cities across the UK to Ireland. The airport is just five miles north of the city, so you may want to hop into a taxi for the short ride. If not, the bus transfer services are excellent. Dublin BusesRoute 41 operates 24 hours between the airport and city centre, and you can also use the Aircoach, which costs about eight euros for a return journey.

Getting around Dublin on a stag do is an absolute breeze. It’s a flat, compact city and most of the main attractions and nightspots are clustered around the centre on either side of the River Liffey, which has several bridges across it. Bus services are excellent if you need them, and if you’d rather take taxis there are ranks all around the city, and they can also be booked in advance of course.

The DART system is a zippy way to get around Dublin city centre and further afield along the gorgeous coastline if you fancy a day at the beach. There are regular trains (with free WiFi) - just purchase tickets at the station.

Dublin also has the Luas tram network which covers the city centre on two lines. Tickets come from streetside vending machines. If you reckon you’ll be using public transport a lot during your Dublin stag then we recommend buying a Leap Visitor Card, which for about £20 gives you full access to the DART, Luas and Dublin Buses.

Lastly, we’ve got to mention the fact that Dublin is ace for cycling around. There’s about 100 miles of cycle lanes around the city, and you can explore them with Dublin Bikes - there are three-day subscriptions available which are ideal for stag groups wanting a little exercise while getting around quickly.

Tips and ideas

In the daytime, Dublin is packed with brilliant stag activities that will suit whatever your group is in the mood for. All the traditional favourites are available here: Bubble Football (a right laugh), Indoor Karting, Paintballing, along with a few Dublin specialities. Enjoy a taster session of Gaelic Football and Hurling perhaps, or a Pedi Bus Pub Crawl where a designated driver-guide steers you around some of Dublin’s best bars while you fellas handle the pedalling, and the drinking.

Next up - no Dublin stag do would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Guinness Storehouse, situated in the heart of St James Gate Brewery. Here, you’ll get the lowdown on the history of the ‘Black Stuff’, and naturally a few samples along the way. It’s a self-guided tour after which you should get yourself up to the rooftop bar for a few pints while taking in panoramic views of the city. Fun game: time how long it takes for one of your group to sigh: “This is the life.”

There are brilliant physical and mental and skills-based challenges at GoQuest - think Crystal Maze. It’s in Carrickmines, a few miles out of town, so let us know if you need door-to-door transfers arranging.

If you prefer a chilled one, you can head over to the vast Phoenix Park just to the west of the city centre. It’s a good place for a casual wander to clear your heads after a heavy night, or if one of you has had the foresight to pack a football or a frisbee.

The Teeling Whiskey Distillery, right in the centre, offers tours and tastings, and you can get stuck into a few cocktails at the bar afterwards too. A fine option for an easygoing afternoon in our opinion.

There are lots of stag-friendly restaurants in Dublin. Many people opt to try out classics like a bowl of Irish stew, or some of the amazing seafood you get here on the coast. When you book with The Stag Company your dedicated adviser can also help arrange evening meals to save you the effort of finding somewhere suitable. Whether you’re after a slap-up three-course Italian dinner, or you want something a bit spicier like steaks with a stripper, we’ve got you covered.

And finally - sports. If your team’s in action over your Dublin stag weekend, then there are several excellent pubs including the River Bar, the Living Room, and Woolshed Baa & Grill that all have big screens, good beer and a great atmosphere. If the rugby’s on (maybe even Six Nations for an amazing atmosphere) then we can help your group book tickets at the Aviva Stadium.

And if you’d like to see some traditional Irish sports in action, then you might like to head over to Croke Park, or Croker. Here there are regular fixtures for both Gaelic football and hurling and, as you would expect, a lively crowd in attendance.

Adrenaline Pumping Activities

Indoor Go-Karting
Got a group of lads who are always arguing over who’s the best behind the wheel? Indoor go-karting in Dublin will settle it once and for all. Ireland’s largest go-karting track is where the action unfolds, and it’s nothing short of...Wait for it...Legendary. You’ll be tearing around a professional quality circuit packed with underpasses, chicanes, and tight corners that’ll test even the cockiest driver, that means you Dave, we're all looking at you. The karts are nippy little beasts, capable of hitting speeds up to 40mph if you’ve got the nerve.

The format is inevitably competitive: practice, qualifiers, and then a full-on Grand Prix. The pressure ramps up when you hit the 15-lap final, where only the fastest, most fearless drivers will come out on top. The winner walks away with all the bragging rights for the weekend. Get ready to leave it all on the track.

Archery Tag

Think you’re a bit of a sharp shooter or a Robin Hood? Archery tag combines the chaos of paintball with the precision of archery and adds a bit of dodgeball madness just for a laugh. You’ll be dodging and diving across a battlezone (time to learn the five d's of dodgeball), taking cover behind obstacles and firing soft-tipped arrows at your mates. Don’t worry, the arrows might sting a bit, but you won’t be nursing bruises all weekend.

It’s all about tactics and quick reactions. Get hit and you’re out unless a teammate catches an arrow and pulls you back in (got any great catchers in the group?). Whether you’re channeling your inner Legolas or just trying to nail the stag for a laugh, this is non-stop action.

Bubble Football

Fancy seeing the groom get smashed into from all the lads? Bubble football is less about showing off your skills and more about surviving the chaos that ensues. You’ll strap yourself into a giant inflatable zorb that makes tackles feel like wrestling matches, and every fall turns into a roll of sheer hilarity. It’s still technically football, kind of. Run, kick, score, but with half your body wrapped in a bubble, it’s more about who can stay on their feet the longest.

Expect plenty of banter, a fair bit of crashing about, and memories that’ll keep the group chuckling for the rest of the trip. By the end, you’ll be out of breath and full of stories to rib each other about in the pub later (which we can book for you).

Nightlife

One of the many, many reasons to recommend a Dublin stag do is that the city has something like 750 pubs. 750! And if that sounds like a daunting prospect, have no fear. Our crack team of Dublin stag planners have at great risk to their own sobriety investigated many of these establishments themselves, and are ready with recommendations you can trust. You can also opt for our legendary Dublin bar crawl for a fun introduction to the city’s finest drinking holes.

Much of the action for Dublin stag do’s is centred around the riverside Temple Bar neighbourhood. It’s here that you’ll find a raft of pubs that are constantly buzzing with live music, from the Auld Dubliner (amazing food by the way) to the Foggy Dew and the Temple Bar. Expect a welcoming atmosphere that will be hard to leave.

For aficionados of craft beer and real ale, the Porterhouse is the place to be, while Bad Bob’s, near Ha’Penny Bridge, is a massive, five-floored pub / restaurant with a roof terrace that on Friday and Saturday nights is one of Dublin’s liveliest joints.

Beyond Temple Bar, though, Dublin has several other stag-friendly areas you might want to check out. 20 minutes’ walk (or a 5-minute cab) south of Temple Bar you’ve got a cluster of bars and clubs around Wexford Street, Camden Street and Harcourt Street. These include Whelan’s, a huge, historic pub that has played host to many big names before they were big, such as Ed Sheeran and the Arctic Monkeys. We’re big fans of Odeon too - make sure the taxi driver knows you don’t want the cinema - a sophisticated late-night venue with cocktails whipped up by expert mixologists, and a chilled Bourbon Bar.

You’ve also got Flannery’s, as popular with locals as it is out-of-towners for the craic here; the Bernard Shaw which for our money has one of the best beer gardens in Dublin, a hip venue with pool tables, and DTwo - perfect for sports lovers with several huge screens. On Harcourt Street you’ll also find two of the most popular clubs in Dublin, both of which will ensure you have a good time into the early hours of the morning: Krystle, the inhouse club at Dicey’s, and the (in)famous Copper Face Jacks. Don't forget that we can help with pre-paid entry to Dublin clubs, as well as sorting drinks packages out for your group to save you heading straight to the bar.

Stoneybatter is a trendy dockside district with a bit more of a bohemian vibe than you’d get at the wilder Temple Bar. Enjoy some honey-voiced Irish music at the Cobblestone, home to the Mulligan family for five generations, or settle down for a pie and a pint at the Belfry.

St. Stephen’s Green, a mile south of Temple Bar, boasts the Well, a hip venue that serves as late-night coffee shop as well as bar and restaurant, and Sinnotts Bar, which is ace for sports including Gaelic football and rugby.

And the action in Dublin continues north of the Liiffey too, with the area around O’Connell Street, Jervis Street and Capel Street worth seeking out if you're nearby. A place we love here is Bar 1661, an award-winning cocktail bar that will be a hit with Irish whiskey fans - definitely one for earlier in the evening though as rowdy groups of lads will not be encouraged.

As you’d probably expect from a city where the locals have a reputation for their warmth and friendliness, as well as quick wit, Dublin has several excellent comedy clubs, including the Laughter Lounge, the Craic Den (great name) and Comedy Crunch.
